Nutrients & Functions?
Krill are small shrimp-like crustaceans loaded with long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. They are about the same size as a paper clip and spend most of their tiny life eating microscopic algae.
They play a major role in the ocean’s ecosystem contributing to the survival of many marine species. Krill live in the pristine and unpolluted waters of the Southern Ocean making them virtually free of contaminants and toxins.
Krill oil is usually taken for the same reasons as cod liver oil, flax oil, and other omega 3 fatty acids. However, Krill Oil is often favoured over and above these because they are gentler on the stomach, have zero fishy aftertaste, and is void of unpleasant digestive issues. Krill supports cognitive function, eye, heart, and liver health.
Key Ingredients?
→ Astaxanthin: This is a natural carotenoid pigment found in microalgae, yeast, trout, salmon, krill, shrimp, among other sea creatures. Astaxanthin is what gives them their beautiful deep pink-red colour, and is responsible for protecting extracted oils from oxidation which effectively eliminates the need to add additives and preservatives. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant and is said to have many health benefits such as healthier skin, energy, healthy heart, joint pain, and much more.
→ Phospholipids: One advantage of krill oil is that its omega-3s are mainly bound to phospholipids, compared to other fish oils that naturally bound to triglycerides. This is an important characteristic because each offers distinct implications for its absorption, function, and health effects. It is capable of targeting a wider area of messaging opportunities to deliver different areas of the body that’s needed the most.
